This years fall carnival was amazing. :) The day started off great with a parade from the K-1 grades. The whole school cheered them on as they showed off their literary costumes (costumes from a book). The day didn't stop there...From 6-7 p.m., students were dressed in their costumes and were able to receive treats from each post on the first floor. There were some very creative costumes. I saw a chef, Sleeping Beauty, Junie B. Jones, a cowgirl, Harry Potter, a caterpillar, Stellaluna, and even a ChickaChicka Boom Boom tree. My costume just had to be Fancy Nancy from the book, Fancy Nancy and the Posh Puppy. My costume idea was no surprise to my students since my favorite word to use is "fancy." From 7-9 p.m., students were able to use their tickets at the booths outside. There was bowling , musical books, bean bag toss, rock climbing, a fun jump, nachos, Starbucks, and the list continues. The carnival was so much fun and the volunteers were great as always. I cannot wait until next year!
So glad to hear you enjoyed the amazing carnival day at the Creek. It is magical isn't it? It is obvious you are enthusiastic about your students and you are sure to be a great teacher. :)
Thank you so much. The carnival was a blast. I know these students will never forget the amazing experiences they have at Chets. It is such a rewarding experience for me to work with teachers who are so passionate and supportive.:)

Book of the Month-November 2009
Listen to Chief Jumping Frog read the November Book of the Month, Long Night Moon. When you open the pages of this book, you will find yourself gazing into the night sky at a thunder moon, a strawberry moon, or perhaps a harvest moon. Enjoy the Book of the Month and reflect on how beautiful nature is and how each moon had an incredible impact on the Native Americans.
Book of the Month for October
The book of the month is Stellaluna by Janell Cannon. Click on the picture above and hear our very own principal read this amazing story.
Lifecycle of a Butterfly Workshop
This was such a fun workshop to attend. We learned all about the lifecycle of the butterfly and different types of butterflies. Did you know that Florida's State Butterfly is the Zebra Longwing? Now you do. We were each given our own larva and we are patiently waiting to see our beautiful butterflies evolve. I can't wait to set my Painted Lady butterfly free into the world. Stay tuned for pictures of my growing caterpillar...
What is Calendar Math?
I love love love Calendar Math. Students explore and discover important mathematical concepts through continuous exposure every day. Students learn how to read a calendar, identify and count money, read and make a graph, weigh solids, tell time, and so much more. Feel free to visit our classroom in the morning to hear students having a great time while learning concepts about math. Stay tuned for a video on calendar math in the future...
Readers Workshop
This week students are focusing on SYNTHESIZING. This strategy helps students to use their prior knowledge and link it to new information to form new ideas. At what point while reading did you say AHA?
Writers Workshop
This week we are continuing our lessons on Responding to Literature. Students will be able to write an opening, retelling, connection (text to text, text to self, text to world), character comparison, and closing on any book of their choice by the end of this week. It is so rewarding to hear students respond to literature.
Beautiful Backgrounds and Wonderful Postings...These are a few of my favorite things :)
Well, hello there. My name is Ms. Hawas. I truly love teaching. It has always been a passion of mine. I still get chills everytime I hear one of my students say, "Aha." (That means they get it, YAY) To be able to make a difference in a childs life is truly a gift.
When I am not teaching my wonderful students, I enjoy shopping, relaxing outside, traveling, and spending time with my family and friends. Of course I love watching my LSU Tigers football team.
I was born and raised in Louisiana and decided to move to Florida 5 years ago. I have 5 brothers and 1 sister...I know, WOW! Right?
